Irradiated ?

New to MC, and beforehand when buying bud I werent asking my guy about the thc %, whether it has been irradiated etc. so all these new terms are spinning me.

Can anyone please explain to me what irradiated bud is and what the differences are?

I’ve got the high silva Cura T8 and the herijuana atm. The high silver is great, feel amazing and does what I want MC to do in terms of easing my anxiety and OCD, the herijuana not so much. Wondering if anyone with knowledge would be able to help me out in understanding why?

As CBPMs are medications there are standards such as GMP in play, dried cannabis flowers may contain spores and bacteria which could be dangerous if inhaled, so they tend to be irradiated (usually beta particles or gamma rays) to destroy any potential foreign contaminants. This can affect the colour of the flower and degrade terpenes but there hasn’t been much research to confirm this so it is mostly subjective.

Some cannabis products are not irradiated as the manufacturers were able to prove to regulators that any contaminants are under the relevant threshold. It is personal preference but I have not found any particular difference between irradiated and non-irradiated flower.

Every person will react slightly differently to a particular strain/cultivar, and there is an entourage effect caused by the various cannabinoids and terpenoids in cannabis which can even change between batches of the same product. You’ll probably need to try a few strains to find ones that consistently work for your specific symptoms, you should then also have an idea of the THC% that is best for you as your tolerance develops.

Irradiation is used in the food industry, too:

[What is irradiated medical cannabis? | Mamedica](https://www.mamedica.co.uk/what-is-irradiated-medical-cannabis/#:~:text=Irradiated%20medical%20cannabis%20refers%20to,kill%20or%20inactivate%20the%20microorganisms.) \- Not an endorsement for Mamedica - just the first result that came up on Google.

You can get non-irradiated flower on prescription although my clinic advised that medically-speaking there is no difference between the two. Usually on your first prescription you just get what your given AFAIK but in future you should have more say (depends who you are with though). With my clinic I'm on repeat now and I just pick whatever I want

I have both the High Silver and the Herijuana...I was so disappointed with the herijuana; very dry, very few to no terpenes (aroma which has lots of healing properties) and the effect was very mild and lasted about an hour.

I'd say this lot of herijauna is poorly produced. When I read about it online and all the reviews I thought it would be great! I'm not judging every grow of herijuana based on this - but this lot is poor 👎

The High Silver on the other hand is great - I've been getting it a few months now...but gets me moving! Its a high energy buzz for me on HS 🤣

From what I've been reading on irradiation.

Basically there are certain microbial standards medical cannabis needs to meet to be sold in the EU/UK

Producers know these levels and if microbes are too high it needs to be irradiated. But think of irradiation as something that increases stability and self life on products too and for immune compromised patients.

EBEAM is the best form of irradiation because they can only ever do two passes or expose the flower for up to 30 seconds and it has less effects on the flower.

Gamma Irradiation is worse and in my opinion is used to kill off bigger microbe levels. Flower can be sat in there for up to 24 hours.

Irradiation is done depending on microbial levels. If they excite the molecules for far too long (to kill more microbes than usual) this is where we see damage from irradiation.

Irradiation has 99 - 99.7% effectiveness
Irradiation cannot guarantee to eliminate all contamination
but it is highly effective at REDUCING contamination.

Any contamination left will continue to grow once on the shelves so producers have to look out how long it will take to sell.

So even though something is irradiated. It depends on say if it was irradiated in the final tubs, how long it's going to take to be sold etc so nothing's ever totally safe.

Every strain has different terpenes which give different affects so I'd have a look at the high silver terps vs the herijuana and see what's different

Irradiated bud is bathed in electron beam radiation to kill off any nasties such as bacteria and prevents mould, downside being it destroys terps and taste... you won't really notice much difference to be honest.

irradiation= terps killer

I think irradiation kills mould spores and other contaminants making the treated product safer and last longer. I personally would prefer fresh properly dried and cured product. It shouldn't really need it and I don't really want old dead long life. So possibly a toss up between safety and freshness 🤷
