Rules surrounding vaping medical cannabis.

Hi,

I am just curious about the rules surrounding using cannabis. I will be moving to university in a month, and although my first prescription is only oil, I would like to reach an agreement with the uni about how I use flower if I ever get prescribed it. I would like to know what I can LEGALLY do, and look at what the university would LIKE me to do, then figure out somewhere in the middle where we're both happy, but I need to know the legal stuff first, otherwise they can make some outlandish demands and I don't know if I must go along with it or not.

So, can you use it indoors, like in a public building such as a lecture hall? Obviously I'm not a complete jackasss that's going to sit in a lecture and blow smoke in people's faces, but again I just need to know the legal side.

Also, I will be moving to a dorm room in a block of flats. Vaping and smoking are not allowed in the building, but would I be able to use my flower if I am prescribed some whilst in my dorm room? The uni has rules for things, and it's this weird situation where yes, it's cannabis, and yes, I will vape it but it's medication. I don't know how much the 'medication' part makes a difference.

This was a poorly thought out post but I think it makes sense, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Every time I try to google it I just get articles about the rules surrounding prescribing it and other useless crap.

Just vape in your room/dorm. Don’t seek an accommodation from landlord- smell does not hang around like smoking. Just back from hols in Spain and vaped in room every day (both nicotine and Mary Jane) with no issues despite smoking ban

Ngl mate, well done for doing the right thing, but personally I would’nt tell anyone working in the accommodation or the uni and just keep it quiet between good mates at uni. Many People in this country are still have unbelievably wrong opinions on cannabis.

I'm not sure with regards to the lecture but legally it's a medication it doesn't fall under the same smoking and vaping rules. Landlords lettings agents should make a reasonable adjustment. I wouldnt think they would stop you legally medicating as you should be

As a university academic, my suggestion would be that you speak with the Advice and Counselling service at your university. If you have already been accepted on the course you can do it now, otherwise, you can contact them as soon as you are accepted. The Advice and Counselling service is a confidential service and they cannot pass on any information unless you give them permission. They also have a duty of care towards the student so in all cases, they will give you the best advice on how to proceed. If they feel that you have to inform the Residences Team at you university, they will support you with this and can write a supporting letter for you. They will also advise the Residences Team on what they need to do to facilitate you.

Once you start the course you will be assigned a Person Tutor, with whom you can discuss your situation. This will also ensure that you are fully supported throughout your studies. Once again the Personal Tutor is bound by confidentiality and he/she cannot disclose any information without your consent.

Hope this helps.

You don't have to disclose your medication but you should so the uni can make reasonable adjustments. If they try to prevent you from vaping, remind them of S6 & S149 of the Equality Act 2010.

Also, get the student union involved.

You don’t have to ask you university permission to take a legally prescribed medicine, ever. Don’t feel that you need to. Nothing is illegal about medical cannabis; whether you university supports your use, or not.

TLDR: don’t tell them. They don’t need to know.

I'm not too sure that vaping in your room would be pragmatic. Every uni dorm I've lived in has got a smoke detector in the room. Some have been so sensitive that deodorant has set it off.

some wild advice here. imo. if its prescribed medicine, which it is, then this is an education issue- specifically explain its a medical inhaler which is required to be used by law. second- explain cannabis has been legal since 2018 for med users. show your dr letter and relevant paperwork to your uni once accepted and you have accommodation etc sorted, do not offer to give any hard copies- ideally show them in person(ask for any requested documents to be asked for formally via email- for legal reasons).
My advice around uni mates. dont advertise ur a med user unless asked. ull get those ppl who want to try ur vape and meds. make it a clear no from start as it would be a serious offence to do so.

How could they make you go outside if you have a volcano and need that? They would need to accommodate somewhere safe with a plug etc for you. Not saying you have a volcano but i need mine as thats the only way i can get medicated quick enough unlike mighty thats me though

Weirdly enough I was going to make a post sort of the same as this.

My GF is going to Uni this year and they have the same no smoking / vaping on property etc, visitors must be declared and they can search you. I will prob speak to them when I help my GF move in because they seem VERY strict and they have the right to search your place and stuff.

I'd suggest posting this on r/UKLegalAdvice or r/UniUK

I'm currently at uni (postgrad, continuing on w/PhD next year's intake) and I have never talked to the university about my medication.

You can't smoke indoors, this covers vaping. You'd have to go outside to vape, as although it's covered as 'medication' the rules surrounding 2nd hand smoke/vape would still apply and the university would just see it the same as any other type of inhalant that's not asthma related.

Legally, you can vape it as you would any other vape, I'm pretty sure that's it. The university wouldn't really have any input into this.

EDIT: Scotland, though pretty sure those rules are the same across UK.

It should fall under the same rules/laws regarding smoking. So not indoors, must be outside, as far as I understand it you can vape MC anywhere you could normally smoke/vape. You wouldn't be allowed to vape in your dorm room regardless of it being medical or not, unless they have smoking friendly dorm rooms

Honestly the biggest issue you'll have is the university wanting to keep your medication safe. A university full of students? Obviously it's a generalisation but I wouldn't trust my meds to not go missing
