Vaping in accommodation

Hi,

I've been lurking on the sub for a while as I'm about to receive my first prescription! I am primarily prescribed for anxiety and depression - and whilst I understand it would be preferable to go outside to medicate, sometimes I may struggle with this.

My question is, does anybody have any experience with medical cannabis in university accommodation? More specifically, private accommodation. I'm just wondering if I'm "legally" allowed to go against the obvious no smoking policies because it's prescribed?

Thanks!

Like someone said before, it's a bit of a gray area.

They can't discriminate against you taking your medication and therefore you should be fine vaping in your room.

If talk to your uni/accomodation about it first just to save the headache down the line.

Also keep in mind your accommodations fire alarms and stuff. It's incredibly unlikely you would set off any fire alarms or smoke detectors vaping weed too but keep that in mind.
Probably best not to use something crazy like a volcano or some other desk top vaporizers and you'll be good

If you want to do it officially, speak to the unis disability service about it. Every uni has to have one. Unofficially, students are well known for smoking anything and everything inside their accomodations so I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as you put everything away and give everything a good air out before any LL inspections.

I was in private uni accom for a year with xenia & after a bit of back and forth I was able to vape in the for the entire stay there with 0 issues. Even had vape stuff frequently out on my desk with 0 questions asked. Did however have to pay an extra £100 on my deposit for the room encase of if it needed deep cleaning after.

You won't be able to go against no smoking policy, even if it is prescribed.

Technically because it's a prescribed medication being used in the prescribed way you are exempt to any smoking bans/restrictions.

However I think we can all understand how the university may feel about this. Let's be honest, they will have genuine concerns about this. The issue they'll have is they'll want to know it's secure, having something like cannabis at uni is pretty much guaranteed to go missing if other students decide to try their luck and "borrow" it from you.

I'd say reach out to your uni and discuss how it will work. They can't stop you taking/using it as it's legally prescribed but they will have a duty of care to their other students and unfortunately this may mean compromise on your side. I'm not saying that's right or fair but unfortunately there will need to be some adjustments.
